Astronomers have discovered a new planet with the same characteristics as our Earth. That being said, this is the closest planet to Earth where life can evolve.
Named ‘Ross 128-B’, the planet is about the size of Earth. Its surface temperature is also very close to the Earth’s temperature. The planet is orbiting a red dwarf star 11 light-years from Earth.
With the help of current technology, it will take about one lakh 41 thousand years to reach this planet. However, researchers have observed that the planet is moving towards the Earth. It will take the planet 69,000 years to reach Earth at this speed.
Astronomers at the European Space Observatory have discovered the red dwarf star and the planet Ross 126-B with the help of a specially equipped exploration device called Harps. The low-mass planet orbits its star in about ten days.
Analyzing data from herpes, the researchers said the planet’s radiation levels were lower than Earth’s. Its surface temperature is minus 60 degrees to 20 degrees Celsius. The surface temperature of the red dwarf star is half that of the Sun, so the planet enjoys cool weather all the time.
Earlier, using NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope, another solar system similar to our own was discovered. The seven planets in the solar system are about the same size as the Earth. The features of three of these planets are much closer to Earth.
